A special bound set of volumes from c. 1923
From left to right they are: Harp of God, Studies in the Scriptures (volumes 1-7), The Diaglott, and Memoirs of Pastor Russell.
To have a closer look - first two copies of The Harp of God.
And then two copies of Memoirs of Pastor Russell: The Laodicean Messenger, published in 1923.

The comment trail raised a question about volume 7 of Studies in this binding. I am grateful to Bernhard who has sent a scan of the cover.
Hi Jerome,
ReplyDeleteThere are two sets of these studies. One from 1923 and the other set from 1924. Other than the date what is different are the end sheets. The 1924 set has cross and crown end sheets. The 1923 set has dark brown end sheets with a raised vine design.
Mike C.
Many thanks for those details
ReplyDeleteOut of interest, is Volume 7 'The Finished Mystery' or a Russell writing from an earlier period? I ask because some Bible Student groups reprint seven volumes, but the seventh is not the FM.
ReplyDeleteI have seen Tabernacle Shadows produced (or numbered) as an extra volume, but I suspect this set includes The Finished Mystery, if only because it also includes The Harp of God. Mike C is the one who would know.
ReplyDeleteThe Memorial set of the Studies was first mentioned in the 12/1/1923 WT. All 7 volumes could be bought for $8.75 or $1.25 per volume which included (Woodworth's/Fisher) Volume 7. The Memorial Harp was also mentioned at this time and could be bought for $1.25 as well. The Memorial Diaglott was added in 1926.
ReplyDeleteIn analyzing the 1924, 1925 Watchtowers there is no mention of these because this was not a set for the public but was made primarily for the friends. Thus hard to find.
Thanks again for the extra details.
DeleteMany thanks to Bernhard and Jerome for this clarification. I asked because I noted some time back that a Bible Student group still existing in Chicago were reprinting and selling Russell's 7 volumes, but the 7th was, if I recall, Tabernacle Shadows. The other thing I recall was that the lighthouse used as their symbol appeared to match that used on these Laodicean Messenger books.
ReplyDeleteAbout this book (Memoirs) from 1923, it was written again: The Watch Tower November 15, 1926 p. 338.
ReplyDeleteIn 1925, seven volumes and a book entitled Harp of God as a shipping set (The Golden Age February 25, 1925 p. 352).
On the other hand, in 1927, together with Lectures, the book entitled Deliverance (The Golden Age November 16, 1927 p. 128):
DELIVERANCE and STUDIES IN THE SCRIPTURES are cloth bound, gold stamped and contain over 3,800 pages. Eight books delivered for $ 2.85. (The Golden Age June 1, 1927 p. 567).
